Experimental research manipulates one or more control variables and measuring the effect it takes/has on the dependent variables. Non-experimental research does not involve the manipulation of any control variables. The following are examples of the two.
Experimental research- Re-accumulation of subdural hematomas SDH continues to be a common yet unsolved problem in the neurosurgical field. Using a randomized control trial RCT patients at random would be chosen to receive a drain (subdural drain used to evacuate chronic subdural hematomas) or not. Using RCT permits unbiased decisions and prevents selection biased when conducting the study and deciding who will receive the drain or not. Consented randomized patients with chronic SDH could take part in the study. The comparison would be randomized controls receiving standard of care i.e. no drain to the experimental treatment i.e. drain placement. The patients would be observed with standard monthly postoperative appointment reassessing postoperative re-accumulation.
Non-experimental- This study was concerning Barriers to Transportation. Focusing on patients with end-stage renal disease receiving in-center hemodialysis. They used a web-based survey to collect the data needed for this study. The link to the web-based survey was disseminated on the National Kidney Foundation’s Facebook page and online forum the survey collected 231 responses. Based on these responses it was determined that numerous barriers were predominant amongst ESRD patients. This nonexperimental study differs from experimental research because it is a correlation design. Nothing new was introduced into the study. No “experiment” was performed. Data was simply collected via survey to correlate the need that ESRD patients had for transportation to their in-center hemodialysis appointments.
