For this paper, you should respond to James Baldwin’s essay “A Talk to Teachers”. While Baldwin is addressing a group of teachers in the 1960s, many of the points he raises are relevant to current debates about race and racism in the United States. For this paper, pick one claim or idea that Baldwin raises that you think is relevant to issues of importance today and answer the following questions:
1. What claim or idea did you pick? What do you think he means by it? (that is, put his idea in your own words)
2. How is this idea relevant to current debates about race and racism in the United States?
3. Do you think that Baldwin’s perspective, claim, or argument is correct? If you do think he is correct, offer your own argument for why it is correct. Don’t just repeat what Baldwin says, try to come up with at least one new reason why we should agree with him. If you think it is not correct, offer your own argument against his claim or idea.
Keep in mind while writing this paper:
– In a philosophy class we care most about your argument. Try to come up with good reasons to support your view, and articulate them as clearly as you can. Think about reasons that might sway others rather than just stating “my opinion is…”
– The papers should be between 250-500 words (corresponding to 1-2 pages double-spaced).
– You may include outside research to support your position if you like, but you do not need to! You must cite anything that you reference, including class materials. You may use any standard, academic citation format.
Here’re four resources mentioned in class, but don’t need to use them all. And also could use other resources.
