For this Reflection you will first read Jefferson’s letter to the Choctaw Nation. After reading the letter, I have provided two links revealing Jefferson’s official Native Indian policy. The video will help you to understand as well. Students should be prepared to compare and contrast the content of Jefferson’s letter to the Choctaws with the reality of his true views and intent.
In your first required paragraph, explain how Jefferson advocated for the Choctaws, how he seemed to view the Natives, and include the reasoning behind it.
For your second paragraph, explain Jefferson’s true intent based on your supplemental reading.Use quotes and specific details to support what you write. How will this affect the Native Indian life?
In your third paragraph explain how you feel or what you think about his subversive tactics? Support your analysis and interpretation with evidence, facts and examples. What were some of the ways Jefferson said one thing but did another?
Make a connection to the words of this president to another contemporary president, presidential candidates or any politician’s (20th or 21st century) treatment of a specific ethnic groups. In other words, how was the treatment of the Native Indians similar to how politicians treat different groups in America today for political gain.
Traditionally, students who don’t carefully read Jefferson’s letter and his actual policy tend to miss the main point of this reflection. Understand you must look for the hidden or implied message Jefferson is sending to the Native Americans. Please pick out a few examples of Jefferson’s words and innuendos to include as quotes in your work. The intention for this assignment along with your chapter reading is to allow students to understand the complex personality and motives of Thomas Jefferson.
