(2 to 3lines) Student 1 : How does this article relate to our course content? Are there any similarities to our content? Differences? What are your thoughts about their findings? This article is related to our course content in different ways when we look at the impact of maltreatment and abuse on children. The article explained that physical abuse was the most common type of abuse to happen. They mentioned that people who may have experienced sexual abuse might have also experienced physical abuse. They also added a prevalence chart that was based on other types of abuse including no child abuse, sexual abuse, and exposure to IPV separating the findings between men and women. What I found interesting was the prevalence chart with findings if the men or women contacted child protection services that did experience a type of child abuse. This prevalence chart included different ages, different types of education, distribution of household income, marital status, and more. It was interesting to look at all the different factors they used to conduct their research. Student 2. Find a research article that is relevant to the current chapter. Briefly describe this article (purpose, methods, main findings – do not use statistical language). What is your impression of this study? The research article I chose that is relevant to this chapter is called “Theorizing disability in child protection : applying critical disability studies to the elevated risk of abuse for disabled children”. I chose to find a research article on this as I work with individuals that live with disabilities and throughout my work I have heard stories of abuse and unfortunately people have explained how “easy” it is to abuse someone with a disability and I was curious what the statistics were. The purpose of this study was to show how children with disabilities experience heightened neglect and abuse and the comparison to non-disabled children. This study concluded that children that live with disabilities often times live in households in poverty or go into households that live in poverty and this disposes children to poorer experiences of parenting and socio-economic risks for child maltreatment as parental stress is considered a risk factor for abuse of children with disabilities. My impression of the study is that it didn’t give me as much information as I would like, reading the textbook already told me that poverty and abuse/maltreatment correlate and I think I was looking for more of an explanation but it makes sense that poverty and maltreatment are a big point.
